Dr. Ranee Jayamaha

Dr. Ranee Jayamaha is a distinguished expert in the field of Monetary Economics with over 50 years of experience in Banking and Financial Services. She served as the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, overseeing Financial System Stability from 2004 to 2009. She was also a member of the Monetary Board of the Central Bank from 2020 to 2023.

Throughout her extensive career, Dr. Jayamaha has made significant contributions to the global financial landscape, having worked with numerous international organizations. Recognized as an expert in Financial Infrastructure Development, particularly in the modernization of payment and settlement systems, Dr. Jayamaha has advised and consulted for Central Banks, Monetary Authorities, the World Bank, IMF, USAID, JICA, SEACEN Centre, BIS-CPSS, Global Payments Forum and the Commonwealth Secretariat. Her practical expertise spans a wide range of areas, including leading, advising, and managing monetary, banking, and financial stability initiatives, as well as macroeconomic analysis.

During her tenure at the Central Bank, Dr. Jayamaha was seconded to various prestigious roles, including Secretary to the Presidential Commission on Finance and Banking, Senior Executive at the Ministry of Finance, and Special Adviser (Economic) at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London, UK.

Following her retirement, Dr. Jayamaha continued to contribute to the field, serving as the Banking Advisor at the Presidential Secretariat and as Chairperson of Hatton National Bank PLC. Currently, she holds directorships at Overseas Realty (Ceylon) PLC, Transnational Lanka Group of Companies, and the Regional Centre for Strategic Studies.

Dr. Ranee Jayamaha is also an accomplished author with numerous publications on payment systems and corporate governance. Her book, “The Money Pipeline: A Pillar of Financial Stability” (2014), offers an in-depth analysis of payment system development in Sri Lanka and across selected countries. She has also published extensively on topics including Monetary Policy, Macroeconomics, Banking Regulations, Payment System Development, Digital Banking, Corporate Governance, and Central Banking.

She holds B.A. (Hons) in Money and Banking, University of Ceylon, Peradeniya, Sri Lanka; MSc. in Economics, University of Stirling, Scotland, UK; Ph.D. in Monetary Economics, University of Bradford, UK.
